NEW YORK — Needing a space on the 25-man roster for Saturday’s starter, Taylor Jordan, the Nationals optioned first baseman Chris Marrero to Triple-A Syracuse after Fridays win over the New York Mets.

Marrero, who was recalled from the minor leagues on June 9, became the odd man out once the team decided to recall Tyler Moore earlier this week. Moore and Marrero serve similar roles on the Nationals’ bench, but Moore has the added versatility of being able to play the outfield in addition to first base.

Marrero was 2-for-16 and appeared in just eight games during his second career big league stint.
