VIERA, Fla. — The Nationals’ schedule this week is a little quirky, as far as spring training goes. After a night home game on Thursday, the Nationals will play a night game in Orlando against the Braves on Friday night — and then travel south to Jupiter on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against the Cardinals.

At any rate, they won’t lack for competition. The Nationals will face Braves’ right-hander Julio Teheran on Friday night and they’ll go against Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright on Saturday.

Those not traveling to Friday night’s game had a workout at the Nationals’ complex this morning and Ryan Zimmerman, up to 120 feet in his throwing program, made throws from the third base area across the diamond to first base.

Zimmerman, who will serve as the Nationals’ designated hitter on Sunday, is progressing very well in his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. He also took batting practice on the field, which he’s been doing for about a week now.

Rafael Soriano is scheduled to throw his second live batting practice session on Saturday and, as manager Davey Johnson said earlier this week, the plan is for him to pitch in a game for the first time on March 5 against the Astros. Soriano does not need more than 8-10 innings in the spring and he will pitch on back-to-back days once at the end of the spring.

Otherwise it was a fairly quiet morning at Space Coast Stadium.
