LAKELAND, Fla. — The Washington Nationals made the two-hour trip west to Joker Marchant Stadium Sunday morning to take on the defending American League Champion Detroit Tigers. Dan Haren, who knows the Tigers well from his days in the American League, will pitch for the Nationals.

It’s mostly bench players and backups for the Nationals today with most veterans not on the travel roster. Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos are the only starters who made the trek.

A few notes from Davey Johnson this morning: The Nationals will simply skip Gio Gonzalez’s turn in the rotation this time around and go right to Jordan Zimmermann on Wednesday. An off-day on Tuesday allows them to do that without slotting someone else into Gonzalez’s spot (he will pitch in the WBC on Tuesday) until his next turn through the rotation, if necessary, and keeps everyone else on regular rest.

Nate Karns did not throw his side session as expected this morning as the Nationals sent his medical information for a second opinion on the upper leg tightness that’s been bothering him for about a week.
