VIERA, Fla. — With Team USA securing its comeback victory over Canada in the World Baseball Classic Sunday night, the Washington Nationals got a little more clarity on where their pitchers will be performing in the next week or so.
Gio Gonzalez will travel to Miami Monday night and start for USA on Tuesday night against the winner of Sunday night’s Dominican Republic vs. Puerto Rico game.
“I’m coming home Hialeah /Miami,” Gonzalez tweeted shortly after the U.S. team’s victory. “Let’s go, USA, USA, USA!!!”
Gonzalez will join Nationals teammate Ross Detwiler with Team USA and both will remain away from the Nationals until the U.S. team is eliminated from the tournament. The final round is in San Francisco and the whole tournament wraps up by March 19.
Detwiler pitched on Saturday night for Team USA, tossing four shutout innings in relief and helping the U.S. team beat Italy.
Roger Bernadina is also still in the tournament with his team, the Netherlands, 1-1 in the second round in Japan. It will play Cuba on Monday and Bernadina, who was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s loss to Japan, tweeted he was hopeful he would play on Monday.
Update: Bernadina was not in the starting lineup for the Dutch team and had not pinch hit through 3 1/2 innings.
