  • Chris Young throws 41 pitches in minor league game

    While the rest of the Washington Nationals teammates were enjoying their first off-day of the spring, Chris Young took his 6-foot-10 frame to the mound at Space Coast Stadium to face minor league hitters. Young threw 41 pitches (26 strikes) in two innings of work against some of the Nationals' minor leaguers. He gave up two unearned runs and sprinkled a few hard-hits among the outs and some spotty defense. He struck out one, 2012 fourth-round pick Brandon Miller. Published March 4 2013

  • Zach Walters' ability impressing Nationals

    Zach Walters has been getting a lot of playing time early in camp, either starting at shortstop or taking over for Ian Desmond when the latter's work is done for the day, and outside of the shoelace chat, the Nationals' seem to be impressed with the 23-year-old. Published March 4 2013

    Monday morning, while the rest of his teammates enjoy their first off-day of the spring, Ross Detwiler will board a plane for Phoenix and begin his transition from Nationals camp to Team USA. Published March 3 2013

    Washington Nationals outfielder Eury Perez was added to the World Baseball Classic roster for the Dominican Republic on Saturday, replacing Yankees outfielder Melky Mesa. Published March 2 2013

  • Nationals notes: Drew Storen faces Cardinals, power bats arrive & more

    Drew Storen pitched the eighth inning Saturday afternoon, facing the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time since the night of Game 5 of the National League Division Series. He struck out the first two batters he faced, and then felt his mechanics falling out of whack a little, "leaking a little bit against the lefties." He loaded the bases. He coaxed a pop out. He moved on. He did not, he said, think once about the last time he'd faced the Cardinals. Published March 2 2013

  • No strikeouts, but Gio Gonzalez satisfied with second spring start

    In Gonzalez's five years in the major leagues, he has only once gotten through an appearance without striking out a batter -- including spring training and the postseason -- and that was in relief during his rookie season. He got his second on Saturday when he pitched three innings against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with 52 pitches. Published March 2 2013

    Gio Gonzalez likes to joke that the visiting clubhouse at Roger Dean Stadium has a locker specifically for him that the clubhouse manager keeps intact because Gonzalez uses it so often. Last spring, Gonzalez made almost all of his starts in Jupiter -- a quirk in the schedule -- and he is back Saturday to continue the tradition. Published March 2 2013

    The World Baseball Classic kicked off Saturday morning a half a world away but there were plenty of Nationals watching with interest as the Dutch team beat South Korea, 5-0. Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina hit third for the Dutch team, going 1-for-5. Published March 2 2013

  • Nationals notes: Tyler Clippard debuts, Anthony Rendon plays shortstop & more

    One of the most heavily-used relievers in the major leagues the past three years, Tyler Clippard came into spring training and planned with the Nationals' coaching staff to take things slow and prepare to go full-blast on April 1. Easing the right-hander into the spring meant that the sixth inning Friday night, in the Nationals' seventh game of the Grapefruit League slate, was the scene for his 2013 debut.   • Jordan Zimmermann feeling confident in changeup

    The process for Jordan Zimmermann to get to the point he was at on Friday night, throwing his changeup with confidence and conviction, was not a quick one. As he put it in the bowels of Champion Stadium "it's been about three years." But in the Nationals' 6-5 victory over the Braves, Zimmermann came out of his three innings of work with effusive praise for the pitch and how strong he felt with it against a Braves lineup that featured at least six of their regulars.     The Nationals' lineup against the Atlanta Braves features some of the Nationals' regulars in irregular places. That's manager Davey Johnson's way of beginning to test out his contingency plans for the regular season. Published March 1 2013

  • Chris Young will start in Ross Detwiler's place on March 9

    The Washington Nationals set a firm plan for right-hander Chris Young on Friday, slightly altering what had been a loose outline. Young will start in a minor league game on Monday, March 4, when the Nationals have their first off-day of the spring. Young will then assume Ross Detwiler's spot in the rotation on March 9 after the left-hander departs for the World Baseball Classic. Published March 1 2013

  • Nationals lineups for Friday & Saturday, plus notes from Friday's workout

    The Nationals' schedule this week is a little quirky, as far as spring training goes. After a night home game on Thursday, the Nationals will play a night game in Orlando against the Braves on Friday night -- and then travel south to Jupiter on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against the Cardinals.
