ATLANTA — Jayson Werth is out of the Nationals’ lineup for the second straight game as he rests a sore left ankle and cramping right hamstring while Steve Lombardozzi gets the start at second base over Danny Espinosa while Ian Desmond moves into the cleanup spot.

Werth, who was hopeful on Tuesday that he’d be in Wednesday night’s lineup, is likely out for precautionary reasons and to give him another full day to heal from those ailments, which afflicted him on Monday.

Espinosa is hitting .173 this season with two homers and 18 strikeouts this season. Since moving into the No. 2 spot in the lineup, from the No. 7 spot, Espinosa has just two hits in 17 plate appearances.

It is still a bit surprising to see him sit with a left-hander on the mound as he is traditionally a stronger right-handed hitter, but manager Davey Johnson said early Wednesday morning on his radio show that he planned to play Lombardozzi in the final two games of the series and rest Espinosa.

General manager Mike Rizzo added on his own radio show later in the day that Espinosa is going through a bit of a funk right now and he sees the move as one to give the second baseman both a mental and a physical break.
