The Washington Nationals were without outfielder Bryce Harper for a second game as he continues to recover from a painful procedure to remove an ingrown toenail on his right foot.

Harper hit on the field on Saturday afternoon, but his foot was still tender so manager Davey Johnson held him out of the lineup.

The hope is that Harper will be ready to go by Sunday as the Nationals wrap up their homestand.

The Nationals did have one new outfielder in the fold on Saturday, though, as Eury Perez officially joined the club and right fielder Jayson Werth went on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain. Perez is expected to remain with the club for the next week, but Werth is expected to be ready to return as soon as he is eligible on May 18.

Perez, a speedy outfielder who made his major league debut last September, was doing well in Triple-A Syracuse, hitting .346 with a .352 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases. Jeff Kobernus was also considered, but Perez was already on the Nationals’ 40-man roster and is a true outfielder whereas Kobernus’ natural position is second base.

Johnson wasn’t entirely sure how he’d use Perez, who was on the Dominican team in the World Baseball Classic, out of the gate.

“I thought last year at times he felt a little out over his skis,” Johnson said of Perez’s brief major league stint last fall. “That’s inexperience. I think he’ll feel more comfortable being here. That’s part of maturity, experience. But we love his talent.”
