Jayson Werth joined Single-A Potomac on Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment for his strained right hamstring.

Werth, who is eligible to come off the disabled list on Saturday, plans to rejoin the team in San Diego where they will head for four games after Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After battling a stomach ailment that may have been causing some of the hamstring cramping and spasming, manager Davey Johnson said Monday that Werth was improving and the belief was that he was moving past both issues.

“He told me (Sunday) during the ballgame that he’s run a couple days in a row and hasn’t had any spasms,” Johnson said. “I think that stomach virus he had, he’s over that too. Maybe it’s that. I don’t really know. But it’s better, and he’s going to play.”

Werth’s return would help to stabilize the Nationals’ outfield and offense that has been without him and Bryce Harper for three of the last five games.
