Nationals - Tigers lineups: Jayson Werth MRI likely clean, on antibiotics for stomach ailment

Jayson Werth spent the morning getting an MRI done on his right hamstring and seeing an internist, according to manager Davey Johnson. And the good news for the Nationals was that the early returns on the MRI were clean.

The doctors put Werth on an antibiotic for a stomach ailment that has plagued the team’s right fielder for about a week and what the team and the doctors seem to feel was leading to the hamstring cramping and spasming that’s been affecting Werth.

The stomach issue may be dehydrating Werth, leading to the muscle issues.

Nationals medical director Wiemi Douoguih was expected to review the MRI closely at some point on Thursday.

“We’ll know more soon, but I imagine, hopefully with what he’s on, he’ll be good to go soon,” Johnson said.

Werth took batting practice and did some running and stretching in the outfield with a strength and conditioning coach toward the end of batting practice on Thursday afternoon.

It was the fifth straight game that Werth was not in the starting lineup, and the seventh day since he was pulled from a game in Atlanta last week. The disabled list is still unlikely, Johnson indicated.

Roger Bernadina got the start in left field for the Nationals with Bryce Harper shifting to right again in Werth’s place. After throwing 34 pitches on Wednesday night, right-hander Tyler Clippard is likely unavailable out of the bullpen for Thursday’s game.
