  • Nationals - Braves lineups: Ian Desmond nursing sore hamstring

One player who is perhaps even less likely than Wilson Ramos to play in both ends of today's doubleheader is Ian Desmond, who came out of Sunday's game with a tight hamstring, though Johnson was unsure which hamstring it was that bothered his shortstop. Published September 17 2013

When they arrive in Washington on Monday and prepare for their final three games at Nationals Park this season, the Braves have a chance to emphasize that dominance. Their magic number to clinch the division is four. If the Nationals lose twice in the series, the Braves will be popping champagne right in front of them. That is not a fact that has been lost on manager Davey Johnson. Published September 16 2013

As the Nationals extended their season-best winning streak to six games on Thursday afternoon with a booming 7-2 victory over the New York Mets -- capping an 8-2 road trip and smashing 13 home runs in the four games here at Citi Field -- they pushed themselves further into the contention picture. And if the stars align, if they can somehow sneak into the second wild card spot, they’ll bring with them another question: who would want to face them? Published September 12 2013

  • The Nationals are still trying to figure out their left-handed relief

The Nationals are still looking to fill the void left by the three left-handers who performed so well for them in 2012: Sean Burnett, Tom Gorzelanny and Michael Gonzalez. The question manager Davey Johnson has been asked recently is simple: with Ian Krol, Fernando Abad and Xavier Cedeno on the roster right now, is the personnel to do that here already? If all goes well and the Washington Nationals' medical personnel gives him the go-ahead, outfielder Bryce Harper will return to the Nationals' lineup on Wednesday after a four-game absence. The Nationals have 18 games remaining in their regular season and as they make their frantic final push for a wild card spot, it's hard not to think back and wonder what might've been this season for Harper had injuries not gotten in his way.
