Congress’ automatic 2.8 percent pay raise, which takes effect Jan. 1, is meeting some opposition on Capitol Hill, the Deseret News is reporting.

The congressional base salary of $169,300 will go up by $4,700 on Thursday.

Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah Democrat, has fought against the automatic pay raise annually and thinks the bad economy might help him win this year.

Yeah, if anything is going to sour that salary sweetener, it’s going to be the economy.

Then again, since the pay raise is automatic, members of Congress can say, “Yeah, I took it. But I did not enjoy it.”
