The AP is reporting that former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, Texas Republican, will join 15 celebrities from entertainment and sports on the new season of “Dancing With the Stars.”

Next season’s cast — the show’s largest — includes models Joanna Krupa and Kathy Ireland; singers Mya, Macy Gray and Aaron Carter; and actors Melissa Joan Hart, Debi Mazar and Ashley Hamilton.

ABC says that other contestants include reality stars Mark Dacascos and Kelly Osbourne; entertainer Donny Osmond; mixed martial artist Chuck Liddell; professional snowboarder Louie Vito; Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin; and former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin.

The ninth season of the hit ABC show premieres Sept. 21.

I hear that ABC officials are in talks with DeLay’s people to temporarily rename the show “Dancing With the Stars and Stripes.”

You know, if this goes well, this could kick off DeLay’s 2012 run for the White House. If it doesn’t go well, he can blame the liberal media. It’s a win-win.

DeLay earned his nickname “The Hammer” for the way he enforced party discipline when he was in office, not for the way he danced. He got the nickname “The Chainsaw” for that.
