Rivals for the U.S. Senate being vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton have told the New York Post that New York Gov. David Paterson will appoint Caroline Kennedy to the position.

Paterson has insisted that he has not yet made a decision, but one of Kennedy’s rivals says the governor “is just trying to play mind games with the press.”

Who would have guessed that David Paterson was a Jedi master, capable of controlling the minds of weak-willed journalists?  Actually, it wouldn’t take a Jedi master to do that.  A toast master could do it easily enough.

If Paterson does appoint Caroline Kennedy, she could run for the office as an incumbent in 2012 — her first campaign for elected office.  There’s nothing like starting at the top.
