Zierden joining Wizards' staff (updated)

Roman Augustoviz of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis reported in today’s paper that Don Zierden, the coach of the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, resigned on Tuesday to accept an assistant coaching position with the Washington Wizards.

Zierden, worked with Saunders for five seasons when Saunders coached the Minnesota Timberwolves, and for another season (2005-06) in Detroit. He has spent the past two seasons as the head coach of the Lynx, during which the team went a combined 26-42 and did not make the playoffs.

Zierden also called Minnesota Gophers games on the radio; have to assume he’s ending that gig as well.

More as we learn and confirm it.

UPDATE (5:28 p.m.)

The Wizards announced the official move in an afternoon press release.

The canned quotes:

Flip Saunders: “I know what kind of man and what kind of coach Don is from our time together in Minnesota, Detroit, La Crosse and Tulsa. Don has an astute mind for the game of basketball, and that’s why he’s been a successful teacher at the high school ranks, in college, the CBA, the WNBA and the NBA.  He brings a wealth of experience and ability to our staff.”

Don Zierden: “I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to work with Flip again. With the staff that he has assembled, and the great talent that is already in place on the roster, I’m extremely enthusiastic to get to Washington and to begin helping this team reach the next level on the court.”
