Rep. Ed Markey, Massachusetts Democrat, swiped at electoral prospects of the GOP, saying Republicans “the Christians had a better chance against the lions,” than the Republicans had against Democrats.

Markey’s reference was to Christian martyrs, who were forced to enter arenas with lions in ancient Rome. His comments came during a victory rally tonight at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in downtown Boston.

A Catholic, the 16 term congressman cruised to an easy victory tonight, with early results showing he will easily defeat Republican challenger John Cunningham.

“GOP used to stand for ‘Grand Old Party,’ but over the last twelve years, it now stands for ‘Get Old People,’ ‘Gang of Polluters,’ ‘Gas and Oil Party,’ ‘Get Our Pensions,’ and beginning later on tonight, GOP stands for ‘Get Out Pronto!’” Markey quipped before a roaring crowd.
