White House press secretary Robert Gibbs squashed on Tuesday squashed rumors that President Obama will name a nominee for the Supreme Court this week.
“It’s not going to happen this week,” Gibbs said.
Justice David Souter last week told the president that he is resigning after 19 years on the court, and on Monday, Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican and member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, spoke to the president.
Hatch told reporters after speaking to the president that he believed a replacement nominee would be announced by the White House this week.
Gibbs said he was mistaken.
“The president … is working with the team to get a look at the people that he thinks are best qualified for this position. We want to move this process along in a timely fashion,” Gibbs said at the daily White House briefing.
