Shanahan on Williams and Davis: "Am I disappointed in them? Big time."

Coach Mike Shanahan this afternoon addressed the suspensions of Fred Davis and Trent Williams, saying he was disappointed in them for making some poor decisions.

“I think our whole team feels let down,” Shanahan said. “There’s no question about it. Everybody should feel let down. Everybody’s accountable for what they do. You always put your team first. You know the consequences when you go through something like that”

He continued: “Am I disappointed in them? Big time. Yeah. Because they affect not only themselves, but this whole organization and their teammates, and that’s a bad decision. They know they put us in a heck of a position, not even talking about themselves and what it means to them and their future.”

As for the players’ futures, considerable uncertainty remains. Davis’ contract expires after this season, so it’s possible he has played his last game for the Redskins.

Another positive drug test for either player would result in a year-long suspension. That likely will affect teams’ approach to pursuing Davis this offseason.

“We’ll see what direction Fred’s going in,” Shanahan said. “I can’t get into a lot of detail, but any contract that anybody would sign somebody to, knowing that with one failed test that they could be gone just like that, they’re going to protect themselves in the contract and it will be based on performance and based on going down the straight and narrow.”

Shanahan said the team became aware of Davis’ and Williams’ positive drug tests once they started getting fined for them, but he wouldn’t say exactly when that was.

The players ultimately were suspended for failing multiple tests. Shanahan is disappointed that they continued to violate the league’s drug policy.

“You’ve always talked to different people when you’re not with them 24 hours a day,” he said. “They’re going to make decisions, and you’re hoping you make decisions that are based on the best interests for them, the best interests for the organization, for  the Washington Redskins. They represent us. Everybody in this organization represents the Washington Redskin logo. When they get suspended like that, it’s disappointing for our whole organization.”

Shanahan said Davis and Williams on Monday requested to address the entire team, which they did Wednesday morning.

“They were men enough today to talk in front of the team and they said, ‘Hey, we did screw up. We promise you it won’t happen again,’” Shanahan said. “We’ll find out in the future if they’re true to their word.

“Any time somebody makes a mistake, and they’re remorseful, you’re hoping they are. You’re hoping they learned from their mistake. Did they? There’s only one way to find out, and that’s time. We will find out in time.”
