The Redskins on Tuesday waived seventh-round rookie cornerback Brandyn Thompson in order to make room on the 53-man roster for veteran cornerback Phillip Buchanon, whose four-game suspension expired Monday. The news was reported by 106.7 The Fan and could not immediately be confirmed.

Thompson played mostly on special teams, but he played some defensive snaps in the second half against Arizona after Josh Wilson and Kevin Barnes were injured. He has two tackles this season.

The Redskins likely would sign Thompson to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Remarkably, this move is the first the Redskins have made to their 53-man roster since setting it over Labor Day weekend. They entered their bye week as one of the healthiest teams in the NFL.
