UPDATED at 2:58 p.m.
The Redskins are in the process of reducing their roster from 79 players to 53 by the NFL’s 6 p.m. Saturday deadline. Veteran safety Chris Horton and inside linebacker Horatio Blades are among the players who have been cut so far.
Horton, a seventh-round pick in 2008, tweeted that he did not make the 53-man roster. He struggled in pass coverage at times during training camp and the preseason. Strong safeties LaRon Landry and Reed Doughty are ahead of him on the depth chart, and rookie DeJon Gomes might be, as well.
Horton was plagued by injuries in past years but made it through camp healthy this summer. His block helped spring Brandon Banks’ 95-yard punt return for a touchdown in Thursday’s preseason finale,
Blades, a sixth-round pick under coach Joe Gibbs in 2007, did not expect to make the team after the Redskins re-signed Rocky McIntosh and signed veteran free agent Keyaron Fox during training camp. Fox and McIntosh are better run stoppers; they’re faster and better at getting off blocks.
Blades ranked sixth on the team last season with 11 special teams tackles. His release was first reported by 106.7 The Fan.
Seventh-round pick Maurice Hurt also was waived, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Hurt, a left guard, was inconsistent with leverage, footwork and hand technique during practices and preseason games. The Redskins hope to sign him to the practice squad.
News about the composition of the final roster has emerged.
Return specialist Brandon Banks tweeted that he made the team.
The Redskins will keep only two quarterbacks, according to FOX5, Washington’s FOX affiliate.
