FB Darrel Young (strained left hamstring) is not expected to play Saturday against Indianapolis, even though he returned to practice this week, coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday afternoon. Redskins head athletic trainer Larry Hess told Shanahan that Young is 85-90 percent healthy.
“He’s not completely healed, but it’s getting better,” Shanahan said.
Young might play in the preseason finale on Aug. 29 even though Shanahan plans to rest the starters in that game. “If he is full-speed, maybe give him a few reps in there, maybe a couple series to get him back into football shape.”
RG Chris Chester (sprained left ankle) fully participated in Tuesday’s practice and is expected to make his preseason debut Saturday, Shanahan said.
RB Roy Helu Jr. (Achilles’ tendinitis, both heels) was limited in practice. “It’s becoming more not as a tight. It’s got more bounce in it.” Ice makes them feel much better, he said.
OLB Brian Orakpo (chest/left shoulder) went through some position drills.
SS Brandon Meriweather’s left knee is still swollen, but Shanahan hopes he can do some drill work on Wednesday. Shanahan said he’d talk about Meriweather’s replacement later in the week. Tanard Jackson replaced him in Saturday’s game.
RB Tim Hightower missed practice to attend his grandfather’s funeral, Shanahan said.
