Graham Gano reportedly has won the Redskins’ placekicking competition over veteran Neil Rackers without attempting a single field goal in a preseason game.

Rackers was released Monday. The Redskins signed the 12-year veteran to compete with Gano.

“I think every day Neil and I went out, we knew that practice was going to play a key role in it. We hoped for more opportunities in the games,” Gano said. “I don’t know what their decision came down to.”

The Redskins believe in Gano’s leg strength and ability, but consistency has eluded him. Gano last year missed 10 field goals attempts, four of which were blocked.

Rackers missed a 54-yarder in the Redskins’ second preseason game, a two-point loss to Chicago.

Gano only got to take part in games on kickoffs and extra points. Has he ever won a kicking competition without so much as attempting a field goal?

“No, I haven’t. That’s the thing, we’ve kicked a lot in practice over the offseason and over the preseason,” he said. “I think we both did well.”
