Mike Shanahan on salary cap penalty: 'It fired me up'

Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said his players didn’t use the $36 million salary cap penalty as motivation against the New York Giants. He didn’t address his team about the penalty, which was believed to be levied because of Giants co-owner John Mara’s recommendation.

But it bothered Shanahan.

“It fired me up,” he said. “Sure it does.”

ESPN and USA Today reported, citing sources, before the Redskins’ “Monday Night Football” game against New York that quotes from Mara were hanging from the office doors of coaches. Mara said in March “I think they are lucky they didn’t lose draft picks” and “I thought the penalties imposed were proper.”
