Redskins TE Fred Davis signed his franchise tender Friday. It’s a one-year deal worth $5.4 million.
By franchising Davis, the Redskins protected themselves from the risk he would be suspended for a year if he violates the league’s substance abuse policy again.
The Redskins could sign Davis, 26, to a long-term contract at any time. He is one of the team’s biggest pass-catching threats. He had 59 receptions for 796 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games last season.
The Redskins did not tender veteran cornerback Byron Westbrook. He is now an unrestricted free agent.
