The Redskins are exploring the possibility of hosting training camp in Richmond, several people involved in the process told the Times-Dispatch on Wednesday.
The T-D reported the Redskins first sought out the University of Richmond, the alma mater of general manager Bruce Allen. However, the focus has shifted to Virginia Commonwealth University and City Stadium, the former home of UR’s football team.
Coach Mike Shanahan has said he prefers to hold training camp away from team headquarters in Ashburn, where the Redskins have held camp since 2003.
Richmond makes sense in that it’s less than two hours from Northern Virginia but far enough away to expand the team’s presence in a market that isn’t saturated with Redskins fans. Every Redskins game is televised there, and Redskins owner Daniel Snyder owns ESPN950-AM there. Approximately 1.3 million people live in the metropolitan area.
Officials told the T-D Richmond is only one of several sites the Redskins are exploring.
