Tight end Chris Cooley is closing in on a new contract with the Redskins, a source with knowledge of the situation said Sunday night. The move was expected after tight end Fred Davis suffered a season-ending torn left Achilles tendon during Sunday’s 27-23 loss to the New York Giants.
Cooley, 30, could sign as early as Monday morning. The franchise’s all-time leader in receptions by a tight end played for the club from 2004 until he was released in August.
Cooley turned down multiple offers to play for other teams partly because he wanted to wait to see whether an opportunity to re-sign with Washington would arise. He could not be reached for comment.
