Long snapper Nick Sundberg breaks left arm

NEW ORLEANS | Nick Sundberg knew it right away. On a Washington Redskins’ punt attempt late in the first half, the long snapper broke his left arm.

I tried to get a hand on a guy, he dipped in to try and get around the corner,” a frustrated Sundberg said. “When he dipped in, I threw my arm out and his helmet just crushed it.”

Sundberg, considered one of the best in the NFL at the specialty of long snapping, broke the same ulna bone in high school. He was visibly upset afterward, needing to put his shirt on with one hand and walking out of the visiting locker room sporting a cast.

His immediate future is unknown.

We’re going to evaluate it this week. That’s the plan,” Sundberg said. “I don’t want to sit out, but ultimately that’s up to the coaching staff depending on how everything turns out tomorrow and things like that, once the adrenaline goes away and everything is going to be a completely different story.”

Sundberg stayed in the game Sunday, snapping the ball nine times after breaking his arm. It looked like he was overseeing center Will Montgomery attempting to long-snap, but Sundberg didn’t let it come to that.

There really wasn’t another choice,” he said.
