NEW ORLEANS | Kirk Cousins treated the preseason as his Super Bowl, but Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints he’ll be one Robert Griffin III injury away from stepping in for the Washington Redskins.
Veteran quarterback Rex Grossman was inactive for Sunday’s season opener, making Cousins the backup to Griffin. Grossman did not appear in two preseason games.
Meanwhile, Cousins was handed the keys to the offense often in the exhibition season, throwing for 560 yards.
Also inactive are nose tackle Chris Baker (ankle), guard Josh LeRibeus. wide receiver Dez Briscoe, safety Brandon Meriweather (knee), guard Adam Gettis and cornerback Crezdon Butler.
Baker was listed as probable earlier in the week on the Redskins’ official injury report. Jarvis Jenkins will back up Barry Cofield at nose tackle with Baker inactive.
The Saints will not have linebacker Jonathan Vilma, even though a three-member panel overturned the suspension for his part in the team’s bounty scandal. He has a knee injury and is a roster exemption. Defensive end Will Smith is active for Sunday’s game.
