RICHMOND—The Redskins agreed with free agent linebacker Nick Barnett on a one-year deal Wednesday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because the team did not immediately announce the agreement.
Barnett is expected to compete for a roster spot in the wake of last Thursday’s injury to top reserve inside linebacker Keenan Robinson. Robinson is expected to have surgery early next week on his torn left pectoral muscle, at which time doctors will determine whether he will miss the season.
Washington was attracted to Barnett’s experience in a 3-4 defense and the fact he has more than 100 tackles in eight of his 10 NFL seasons. He played the last two seasons for Buffalo and his first eight for Green Bay.
The Redskins did not have to make a corresponding move to their 90-man roster. They had a vacancy after placing running back Tristan Davis on the exempt/left squad list on Tuesday.
