The Washington Redskins claimed center J.D. Walton off waivers on Wednesday and waived wide receiver Lance Lewis to make room for him on the active roster.

Walton, a 6-foot-3, 305-pound center drafted by the Broncos in the third round out of Baylor in 2010, has not played since breaking his left ankle in Week 4 last season. He spent all of this season on the physically-unable-to-perform list before being activated on Nov. 5, but has not yet played in a game.

By claiming Walton off waivers, the Redskins will assume the roughly $155,000 remaining in the final year of his rookie contract. He played two seasons with Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III in college.

Lewis played in three games for the Redskins after being signed off their practice squad on Nov. 21, but played primarily on special teams.
