Maurice Hurt remains on PUP list, ending his season

After spending all of training camp and the first 13 weeks on the physically-unable-to-perform list, Maurice Hurt will not be moved to the Washington Redskins’ active roster and will be ineligible to play the remainder of this season, coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday.

Hurt, in his third season, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on May 30. Shanahan said Wednesday, though, that Hurt doesn’t really have on injury in particular, “but you’ve got to activate somebody or deactivate somebody, and we decided to go in that direction.”

The 6-foot-3, 329-pound offensive lineman, a seventh-round pick out of Florida in 2011, has played in nine games, starting eight in 2011 at left guard and one last season at right tackle. He returned to practice on Nov. 13 and faced a Wednesday deadline to be moved to the active roster.

Shanahan said Hurt would be placed on injured reserve, but he will remain on the reserve/PUP list – a designation that is essentially the same.

“He’s looking better, but you’ve got to make a decision what direction you’re going to go,” Shanahan said. “Missing all that time, we decided to go in that direction.”
