Redskins left tackle Trent Williams will not play in Sunday’s Pro Bowl following an altercation at a Honolulu nightclub early Friday morning that resulted in him requiring stitches, according to Honolulu police, NFL officials and others with knowledge of the situation.
Williams’ injuries are not serious, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Honolulu police indicated Williams is not a suspect in the incident, which injured three men and sent two to the hospital.
Williams was Tasered as part of an assault, ESPN reported. One man was arrested and five others are being investigated for assault, police said. Those being investigated include nightclub employees, one source said.
“Dam somebody gave my boy Trent Williams 7 stitches . Wasn’t his fault . Don’t hate . He did nothing wrong,” Redskins right tackle Jammal Brown tweeted Friday. Brown’s former teammate, New Orleans Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod, also is at the Pro Bowl.
An NFL investigation concluded Williams was a victim in the incident, a source said. Williams will be on the sideline for Sunday’s game, won’t lose his status as a member of the NFC team and will be paid a full Pro Bowl player’s share, according to a statement by the NFL.
Williams did not answer a call to his cell phone and did not respond to a cell phone message. His involvement in the fracas was first reported by Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan.
Honolulu police captain Andrew Lum released a statement Friday night through a police spokesperson:
“At 1:30 am this morning, Honolulu Police Department (HPD) officers responded to a report of a large affray at a night club in central Honolulu. Three males were injured during the affray. Two were treated and released from the hospital, and the third male declined treatment.
“One male was arrested for Assault in the 3rd Degree and additional arrests are likely. The HPD has opened an Assault 2nd and four Assault 3rd investigations. The investigation into these offenses continue.”
Williams, a third-year pro, was one of three Redskins nominated to the NFL’s annual all-star game. He set that goal for himself at the beginning of the season. Quarterback Robert Griffin III won’t play because of his right knee injury. Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander is the NFC’s special teams representative.
Linebackers London Fletcher and Ryan Kerrigan were named to the game last Sunday as replacements for ineligible San Francisco 49ers players.
Williams was replaced Friday afternoon by Minnesota Vikings rookie tackle Matt Kalil.
