Redskins punter Sav Rocca was accustomed to contact during his 14-year career as an Australian Footballer. They don’t wear helmets or facemasks in the Australian Football League, though, and that difference proved costly to Rocca this week.

He was fined $7,875 for tackling Cowboys punt returner Dwayne Harris by the facemask in last Sunday’s 28-18 victory, according to an NFL spokesman. Watch the play again. It was a vicious tackle. Rocca had one hand on Harris’ facemask and the other on Harris’ long hair.


I’m not convinced Harris would have scored if Rocca hadn’t made the tackle. Lorenzo Alexander and Darrel Young had angles on him, but it might have been close. Dallas scored a touchdown three plays later, anyway.
