Robert Griffin III is receiving unsolicited wedding gifts from fans—and some strong criticism for it from others.
The Redskins’ star quarterback spent part of Sunday on Twitter defending himself after he tweeted a picture of himself lying on pile of empty boxes along with a thank-you message to fans for purchasing his fiancee, Rebecca Liddicoat, and him items on their registry at Bed, Bath & Beyond.
Thank you to the Fans who are helping buy ALL the items from our wedding registry at Bed Bath & Beyond … say.ly/MLw5Rbg— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) May 19, 2013
Griffin tweeted that he never advertised his registry—several media outlets discovered it and publicized it—or asked for gifts from fans.
Still, the initial picture chafed some of Griffin’s Twitter followers, who apparently were jarred by a multimillionaire receiving gifts from others:
Griffin immediately went on the defensive:
Because you are rich you are not allowed to receive gifts and any gifts you receive should be donated to charity???? #WOW Smh…— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) May 20, 2013
Haters gon hate. Theme of the day. They always say more money more problems. Or mo’ money mo’ problems. Yea I’m cultured #DealWithIt— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) May 20, 2013
Griffin also received many supportive tweets from fans in the face of the criticism. He retweeted this one:
A registry page on Bed, Bath & Beyond’s website naming Griffin and his fiancee lists the wedding date as July 6. He did not respond to an attempt to confirm the date or the authenticity of the site. He is expected to talk to reporters on Thursday for the first time on team property since suffering his knee injury in January.
