RG3 defends against criticism after publicizing fans' wedding registry purchases

Robert Griffin III is receiving unsolicited wedding gifts from fans—and some strong criticism for it from others.

The Redskins’ star quarterback spent part of Sunday on Twitter defending himself after he tweeted a picture of himself lying on pile of empty boxes along with a thank-you message to fans for purchasing his fiancee, Rebecca Liddicoat, and him items on their registry at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Griffin tweeted that he never advertised his registry—several media outlets discovered it and publicized it—or asked for gifts from fans.

Still, the initial picture chafed some of Griffin’s Twitter followers, who apparently were jarred by a multimillionaire receiving gifts from others:

Griffin also received many supportive tweets from fans in the face of the criticism. He retweeted this one:

A registry page on Bed, Bath & Beyond’s website naming Griffin and his fiancee lists the wedding date as July 6. He did not respond to an attempt to confirm the date or the authenticity of the site. He is expected to talk to reporters on Thursday for the first time on team property since suffering his knee injury in January.
