Springs absent, Taylor watching

Cornerback Shawn Springs, who reinjured his calf near the end of Thursday’s practice, wasn’t on the field for today’s workout. Defensive end Jason Taylor was out there but without a helmet. Since coach Jim Zorn on Thursday questioned cornerback Fred Smoot’s odds of playing on Sunday, Springs’ absence would make Leigh Torrence a starter for the first time and rookie Justin Tryon the No. 3 corner. That would be really bad news since Cleveland has a potent passing game. The absence of active sacks leader Taylor from the pass rush because of swelling his his surgically repaired calf would compound the problems.
