Washington might be Redskins-crazed right now, but a 4-1 start hasn’t always produced a happy ending. As the team’s pyblic relations staff noted in this week’s release, this is the Redskins’ 13th 4-1 start since the 1970 merger and five of those 13 years ended in the Super Bowl. However, three of those seasons (1978, 1979 and 1996) ended without a playoff berth. What’s worse, the Redskins started 6-0 in 1978 and 7-1 in 1996 and failed to qualify.
