Fifty five players participated in a 60-minute special teams practice this afternoon at Redskin Park, a session that started in a downpour but ended in broiling heat.

Taking kickoff returns were Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts, Devin Thomas and Anthony Alridge.

Punter Hunter Smith booted his first kicks of camp but neither Shaun Suisham or Dave Rayner tried a kickoff or field goal.

OG Rueben Riley, who left this morning’s practice early, returned for the special teams session.

Among those participating were starters LaRon Landry, Mike Sellers, Rocky McIntosh, Chris Horton and Brian Orakpo.

Special teams coach Danny Smith led the practice while coach Jim Zorn looked on.

“I’m a big drill guy and technique guy and we’re just teaching them drills — putting them in game situations through drills,” Smith said. “It helps the younger guys because a lot of haven’t done it and some of them have done it but not practiced it.”

Tomorrow it’s back to two full-squad workouts — 8:30 a.m. (open) and 3 p.m. (closed).
