Jim Zorn held court after this morning’s practice and covered a variety of topics. The highlights.
*RG Randy Thomas practiced in full pads today but I would be stunned if he played Thursday at Baltimore.
Said Zorn: “He’s going to want to play even if it’s for a couple of series. I’m not 100 percent sure I want to put him out there yet and give him an opportunity to come back that next week. As the season gears up, we need to have him ready and not have any setbacks. It’s undecided yet. … We have to hold some of these guys back and Randy is definitely one of those guys because he wants to be with his teammates but we’re trying to pull the reins on him and crack the whip on a couple others.”
*Zorn on WR Marques Hagans, who I’m guessing is battling D.J. Hackett and Marko Mitchell for the fifth receiver spot: “Very good hands and a good route runner. He concentrates well and he’s very dangerous if he gets into a bit of an open field.”
*On so many players catching a pass in the Saturday scrimmage: “There’s enough for everybody there. Even in our scrimmage, we had 12 guys catch a ball and a few guys catch more than that. I think that’s the way the offense works. That’s why we get such hard work out there – anybody has a chance to catch the ball on any given play. Even the running backs catching a check-down is an important part of anbody’s offense.”
*It was interesting to see how Zorn left the quarterback drills this morning to watch the OL vs. DL drills that basically has a series a 1-on-1 matchups. Zorn told me afterward it was the first time this training camp he’s watched the drill in person. I’ll read between the lines and predict this is a gauge on Zorn’s concern with the pass protection.
*The Redskins are back on the field in a few minutes for a special teams practice.
