Gray won't move as assistant

Secondary coach Jerry Gray isn’t going anywhere unless he lands Detroit’s head coaching job.

The Houston Chronicle reported that the Redskins denied the Texans permission to interview Gray for their then-vacant defensive coordinator’s position last week. That put Gray off-limits for all opening except head coach.

It seems silly and against the intent of the Rooney Rule, but under NFL rules, teams can prevent assistants from interviewing for promotions from position coach to coordinator. So unless Gray’s old Tampa Bay teammate, Martin Mayhew, hires him to take over the winless Lions, the former Buffalo coordinator will return to the Redskins for a fourth year.
