Redskins tight end Chris Cooley said on his Twitter account minutes ago that he will undergo surgery on his right tibia Wednesday and could return this year. “3 pins go in the ankle tomorrow. Hopefully be back in 4 weeks. Thanks for all the support,” Cooley’s message said. A source said a return in four weeks is “possible” but all options will be reviewed following the surgery.
Cooley was injured in the second quarter of the Redskins’ loss to Philadelphia on Monday night. At his Tuesday press conference, coach Jim Zorn expected Cooley to miss 6-8 weeks and to be placed on injured reserve. That changed followed a visit with a specialist. Cooley has never missed an NFL game but will be out at least a month at the minimum.
At least for the next few weeks, it’s expected Cooley will not be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.
