The Republicans loved Sen. Joe Biden joking recently that being a council member is harder than being a senator.

“I used to be a councilman,” he said while praising a local member where he was campaigning. “I left that for this job, for the senate, you know why? Your job was harder.”

Here’s video.

It comes after the VP nominee lauded Sen. Hillary Clinton after being asked about her at a campaign event, quipping she may have been a better choice as Obama’s running mate.

Team McCain hasn’t jumped on this yet - this morning at a rally in Canton, Ohio, he praised Gov. Ted Strickland who had introduced him.

“If we had 49 other governors like this, we wouldn’t need a president,” Biden said.

However, the Republicans are pushing the line that Biden said tax increases are patriotic, though that’s not exactly what he said today on Good Morning America.

“We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people,” he said.

Talking to ABC’s Kate Snow, he said people making more than $250,000 per year “are going to pay more” should realize: “It’s time to be patriotic, Kate, time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”

It’s not a new idea. In fact, people push this all the time. Also worth noting that John McCain initially opposed the Bush tax cuts.

Still, it must be a fun GOP target, and it got play from both McCain and Sarah Palin this morning. When they each mentioned it at an event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the crowd happily booed.

“They have some strange ideas about raising taxes,” Palin said. “To them, and Joe Biden said it again today, raising taxes is about patriotism. This isn’t about anyone’s patriotism, it’s about Barack Obama’s poor judgment.”

“It’s just plain dumb,” McCain said while mocking Biden.
