D.C. United on Thursday acquired defender Mike Chabala from the Portland Timbers for a 2014 supplemental draft pick.

Chabala, 28, gives the club insurance at left back with incumbent Daniel Woolard sidelined by a concussion suffered in a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

Since being traded to Portland midway through last season, Chabala made 23 appearances (19 starts) for the Timbers in league play. The University of Washington product played for the Houston Dynamo from 2006 to 2011, logging 47 games (36 starts). He has two career goals.

In a corresponding roster move, midfielder Kurt Morsink announced his retirement. He will remain with the club as its scouting coordinator.

The 28-year-old made 20 appearances (18 starts) in 2010, his first campaign with United, but played just two games last year and had not appeared in a league match this season.

“Full credit for this new hire is due to our investment group, who has made expanding our scouting reach a priority,” general manager Dave Kasper said.
