D.C. United defender-midfielder Andy Najar, a Honduran Olympic veteran, will go on loan to Belgian side RSC Anderlecht through the end of January, the MLS club announced Monday.

Najar, 19, had been training with the defending league champions since mid-December. He now will be available for selection for the rest of the month, meaning he will miss at least the first two weeks of United’s preseason preparations, which begin Jan. 17.

“This is another very good opportunity for Andy to gain valuable experience with a top European club,” said United general manager Dave Kasper in a statement. “We look forward to his return for the second half of our pre-season.”

The 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year has recorded 10 goals and 11 assists in 82 MLS matches, playing as a winger and right back. Among his teammates at Anderlecht is U.S. national team midfielder and MLS product Sacha Kljestan.
