Eleven players who competed in the 1997 U.S. Open at Congressional have returned for this year’s Open. Pretty good staying power, you have to admit. Why don’t we hold a competition among them this week? Low man wins a … Washington Times coffee mug or something.

Here’s how they stood after Round 1. We’ll update the scoreboard every day.

70 Stewart Cink (T-13 in 1997)

70 Davis Love (T-16)

71 Paddy Harrington (missed cut)

73 Robert Allenby (missed cut)

73 Ernie Els (won)

74 Jim Furyk (T-5)

74 Phil Mickelson (T-43)

74 David Toms (withdrew)

75 Fred Funk (T-43)

75 Steve Stricker (T-36)

75 Lee Westwood (T-19)

Oh, and in the other side tournament, the Battle of the Bubbas, Bubba Dickerson (70) leads Bubba Watson (71) by a stroke.
