Rory McIlroy keeps rolling on Friday at Congressional

Rory McIlroy said Thursday evening after finishing the first round that he was going to bed with a “clean mind.” The 18-hole leader at the U.S. Open had been here before – leading the Masters for much of the way before losing grip on that tournament on Sunday.

Friday morning, McIlroy looked like a player hell-bent on not letting history repeat itself. McIlroy, who shot a 6-under 65 to take a three stroke lead into Friday, went five more strokes under par through 14 holes, including an eagle on No. 8. He also birdied Nos. 4, 6 and 14.

McIlroy appeared to be running away from the field, with Zach Johnson and Y.E. Yang tied for second at 3-under … eight strokes back.
