After four holes Saturday, Lee Westwood sat at 2-over at the U.S. Open and lightyears away from the front-running Rory McIlroy, who was at 11-under going into the round.
He clawed his way back to par after seven. Then came the back nine – a place where many golfers saw good rounds go awry. Except Westwood found his game.
The second-ranked player in the world birdied No. 13. Then No. 14. Then No. 15. On No. 16, he sank an eagle to move into second place at 5-under. Even with McIlroy cruising along, Westwood’s rally put him in striking distance.
