The Conservative Plurality

← return to Water Cooler

A new Gallup Poll shows that 40% of American self-identify as Conservatives, versus 21% who self identify as Liberals and 35% as Moderates. This ties conservative records set in 2003-2004 (the data shown are since 1992), and is up 3% from 2008. Also of note is that conservatives and liberals are almost equally represented in the 18-29 year group (30% and 31% respectively) which shows that the youth vote is up for grabs and not a lock for the left. These data challenge the notion that the U.S. is listing leftward, and the fact that conservatives continue to vastly outnumber liberals should encourage the opposition going into the 2010 elections.
