PICKET: Newt - I am 'legitimate heir' of Reagan movement not Romney

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich addressed a massive crowd of thousands at The Villages, a retirement community in central Florida. Mr. Gingrich worked the cheering attendees with comments that included the promise of getting rid of the Obama administration’s czar bureaucracy and taking on the president for not supporting the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Mr. Gingrich hit back at former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney over ads that claim that the Speaker did not have a politically favorable relationship with President Reagan. He pointed to Michael Reagan, President Reagan’s son, who is a Gingrich supporter as proof that his critics are wrong about this issue.

“I am delighted that tomorrow Michael Reagan will be campaigning with me. Which should tell you how false the ads were this week by Romney that suggested that I wasn’t a Reagan Republican,” said Speaker Gingrich.

Mr. Gingrich then referenced a 1995 quote from former first lady Nancy Reagan, President Reagan’s wife.

“Nancy Reagan said in 1995, ‘Just as Barry passed the torch to Ronnie, Ronnie has passed the torch to Newt.’  Michael will be here tomorrow to prove to everybody in person I am, in fact, the legitimate heir of the Reagan movement not some liberal from Massachusetts.”
