The Wizards will take on the Houston Rockets on Monday afternoon at Verizon center, where coach Flip Saunders will face Kevin McHale for the first time on the opposing bench.
McHale hired Saunders to be the President of the Minnesota Timberwolves back in May of 1995, and made him the team’s head coach in December. The two were teammates at the University of Minnesota.
“It’s good to see that he’s back,” Saunders said of McHale. McHale spent last season as an analyst for Turner Sports.
“He decided that even though he was in the booth, and it’s a lot more comfortable there, sometimes those competitive juices, you can’t get out of your system. Just to get back in the trenches is something that he felt he missed too much.”
Saunders said that McHale isn’t fond of the travel, but with the shortened season, might have felt he could handle this year.
“What it boils down to is that he’s in a different place now in his life.”
Saunders said the only the tow have coached against one another was in practice, or during the summer.
“Maybe in sumer camps, with 12 year-olds.”
