ATLANTA — The news surrounding the return of Nene to the Wizards lineup seems to change every hour. On Tuesday, CSN Bay Area NBA writer Ric Bucher tweeted the following: “Look for Nene to make season debut on Wednesday.”
Barely an hour before Wednesday’s game against the Hawks, Wizards coach Randy Wittman wasn’t giving up too much information about the status of his injury-plagued center.
“We’ll see after he goes out and warms up. We’ll see how it goes. I can’t answer that right now.”
Wittman also stated that he’s going to change his starting lineup, but once again, didn’t specify those changes.
“You’ll see at tipoff,” he told reporters. “Again, we have to try different combinations than we’ve had before, just trying to find the right mix. We’ll continue to search and do that until we find it.
If Nene can go, he’ll limited after having just one practice.
“To be determined,” Wittman said of Nene’s possible minutes. “I don’t know yet, he’ll be limited, obviously. I just don’t know right now. We’ll talk about that if he comes and tells me he can go.”
“He’s been out there the last couple of days doing some dummy stuff, some half court stuff, some full court stuff. He has some familiarity with what we’re doing. It’s going to take some time. He hasn’t played in a while. Conditioning, getting his legs back under him, it’s going to take a while to get all those things worked out.”
As for Nene, he’s hoping he can go tonight. In the visiting locker room at Phillips Arena, Nene was putting on compression socks as he prepared to warm up before the game.
“Maybe I can do something tonight,” he said. “I’ve only had one practice. I’m going to rely on my experience and my faith.”
