By Greg Bennett

Legendary comic book store owner Greg Bennett provides a pair of recommendations for comic book lovers every week. Titles are either currently on specialty store shelves or shipping or in the near future. Fans can also click on the covers to appreciate the fine art.

Secret Invasion, No. 8 from Marvel Entertainment

Secret Invasion, No. 8, Marvel Entertainment ($3.99)

It’s finally here!  Only none of the rumors are true — Marvel’s internet disinformation campaign on this will become the stuff of legend.  I won’t give out spoilers, but make sure you read this before you look at ANY Dark Reign promo materials, because they’re chock full of ‘em.

Spirit: Volume 1 from DC Comics

Spirit: Volume 1, trade paperback DC Comics ($19.99)

It may not look like the new movie (Frank Miller’s The Spirit looks more like Sin City than anything), but it’s a great tribute to the original Will Eisner Spirit from the 1940s & ‘50s.  Brought to you by retro design king Darwyn Cooke (New Frontier).  As a bonus you get Jeph Loeb (Heroes-TV) and Cooke’s Batman/Spirit one-shot, that reads like an episode of the legendary 1990s Batman cartoon!

Greg Bennett is the Owner/Manager of Big Planet Comics, a chain of pop art specialty stores in the DC Metro area with locations in Georgetown, Bethesda, Vienna, & College Park.
